First Kill takes place about six months after the events of the original video game, during which time Talia has not used her hunter-killing abilities. However, when she learns that Cal has been captured by slave traders, she goes on a rampage to save him from his captors and ends up killing them all, despite her son’s protests. This shows how deeply Talia loves Cal and also demonstrates just how powerful she really is. When it comes to protecting those she loves, nothing will stop her from acting decisively and taking out whatever or whoever poses an obstacle in her way. Who is Aubin Wise?
Aubin Wise was born on October 6, 1988 in Montclair, New Jersey. She is an actress and producer, known for Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008), Two and a Half Men (2003) and Sperms of Endearment (2011). Aubin has been married to Cal Worsham since March 16, 2010. She was previously married to Josh Beech. Aubin is also known as Talia.
The year 2015 marks twenty years since Cal Worsham came into our lives as the boy with all those problems on All My Children. As we celebrate his 20th anniversary, we thought it would be fun to revisit that time period when he became one of daytime television’s most famous characters by remembering his parents, Tad Martin and Dixie Cooney Martin. I spoke with former AMC star Aubin Wise who played Cal’s mother Talia about her time on set with her co-stars back then and what she thinks about them now.
What drew her to this role?
I’m drawn to roles like Talia in First Kill because they challenge me as an actor. I’m already a mother, so I know what it means to protect and nurture your children. But here is someone who has done just that, raised her son into a moral, ethical person, only to have him turn on her in self-defense when he witnesses her trying to kill his father (played by David O’Hara). As a woman and as a parent, that is something which I could relate to. This role was very much about finding those universal truths and putting my own emotions onto it. It helped me get deeper into myself as an actor and take myself further out of my comfort zone in order for me to grow as an artist.
What was it like shooting the scenes with Arthur?
Aubin Wise, who plays Cal’s mom, Talia Winters, remembers her first kill—on Dark Matter! When I read it I was like wow, yeah – a psycho mom who would happily and readily slit her son’s throat to prove that she could. It was pretty dark stuff but so much fun to shoot. The director, Andy Mikita and his team did a fantastic job of working with us as actors to get what they needed in terms of our performance while also making sure we were safe during all those insane stunts. We have such a great cast and crew on Dark Matter that it made even these extreme scenes enjoyable.
How was it coming back to television after all these years?
It was very exciting, mostly because I had such a great group of people to work with. One thing I knew when I agreed to do First Kill was that it would be fun and interesting to work on. What I didn’t know at first was that we’d have as much fun off camera. When we got done shooting each day, everyone would head out for dinner, drinks and laughs. It made for a really pleasant working environment and then when we got on set, it all just clicked.
What do you hope audiences take away from watching this role?
I hope they empathize with Talia. She has been dealt a tough hand, but she is trying to make a new life for herself and her son Cal. Hopefully people will see her struggles and how hard she works to overcome them. I also hope people like my performance, since I’ve never played someone quite like Talia before! [8] How did you prepare for your role?: I read all of Cal’s books so that I could get inside his head. It was important to me that we had similar views on everything from religion to politics, so it was important that I understood his beliefs and where he came from.[9]
Anything else you want people to know about your show/performance on it?
I really enjoyed playing Cal’s mother. She is so damaged and she looks at Cal like he is her best friend/her only hope in life. I think that they are similar people and want to escape their lives as fast as possible, but when faced with death they know there are consequences to your actions, which brings them closer together. It was a great experience working on it! Cal and Talia have a very special relationship that will be explored more in future episodes. Their characters have a lot of depth, even though we don’t see much of it yet on screen. But who knows what else might happen between them?
