Early life

Stephen John Coogan was born on 14th October 1965 in Middleton, Lancashire. His mother, Kathleen (née Bennett), was a housewife and former actress who had appeared in an episode of Coronation Street, and his father, Anthony Francis Martin Coogan, was an accountant who became a Catholic lay preacher.

Television (early)

As a voice actor, he provided voices for puppet characters in Spitting Image and acted in comedic roles on shows such as Doctor Who. He first began appearing in front of the camera in 1986, playing a minor role as an extra in an episode of Ripping Yarns. In 1987, he landed his first major role in Scrappers.

Film (early)

In 1983, he secured a minor role in an episode of the television series Freddie as a voice actor. He then secured his first major role playing Oliver Mellors in an adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover opposite Charlotte Coleman.

The rise to fame

In 1990, he created and starred in The Day Today, a satirical television programme set in a fictional news studio. In 1995, he co-wrote and co-starred in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (for which he was nominated for a BAFTA), playing an exaggerated version of himself, who is accidentally installed as director of communications at a fictional radio station. In 2013, he launched his new show Steve on Sky Atlantic.

Charity work

It wasn’t until he did an interview with one of his favorite comedians, Steve Martin, that he decided to launch a new career as a voice actor and comedian. He took on his role as a voice actor in 1988 when he became part of Spitting Image, a satirical puppet show. After three years of voicing silly caricatures, including Margaret Thatcher, Billie Jean King and George H.W. Bush for Spitting Image , Stephen began doing voice-overs for British TV advertisements.

Stephen John Coogan was born in Middleton, Greater Manchester. His father, Timothy Vincent Tim Coogan, a Catholic of Irish descent, was a Church of England vicar choral and subsequently a chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II and education officer for Bradford Diocese until his death on 5 October 2009 from complications following heart surgery. His mother is from an Ulster Protestant family.
