Introducing our star

The best way to get a sense of who a racer is—other than talking to them in person, which not everyone has access to—is watching them race. Luckily, many racing organizations post videos on their websites or on YouTube. In our case, we’re going with Jamie Laura Chadwick, a British driver whose W Series career began in 2019 and has blossomed into an all-around powerhouse at Jenner Racing.

Why driving cars was never enough

Cars aren’t fast enough and karting isn’t challenging enough, according to seven-year-old racing driver Jamie Laura Chadwick. I always wanted more, she says. When I was in Formula 1 at four years old, I wasn’t satisfied with winning. I wanted to win again and again and again. So what did she do?

It all started with karting

Born in Melton Mowbray, England, Chadwick was introduced to motorsport at a young age. Her parents signed her up for karting races and she immediately fell in love with it. Within two years, she had earned multiple trophies and was competing against boys, who were bigger and older than her.

Transition to cars

The move from karts to single-seaters can be difficult, but it’s also necessary for a driver’s progression. There are two options: Skip these categories and join a professional racing team in their junior series, or make a gradual transition through different junior racing categories—the most common being Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2. We interviewed W Series champion Jamie Chadwick on how she made her way up in motorsport.

The UK championships are tough

In 2017, Chadwick came second in BRDC British Formula 3 (the UK’s top single-seater category) and third in European F3. But even before she landed those results, she had already won a coveted place on Red Bull’s Junior Team – and was subsequently announced as one of two drivers for its 2019 junior driver programme. She also competed in BRDC British F3 with Douglas Motorsport as part of an agreement between Red Bull and G2 Esports.

Moving on up!

These days, motorsport has become more of a commercial industry than anything else. Sponsorships, partnerships and acquisitions are all par for the course when it comes to competing in motorsport at any level, from local club races all of way up to Formula One. There are even entire series dedicated solely to driver sponsorships like Fernando Alonso’s Acura Sports Car Challenge in IMSA!

When opportunity knocks… grab it!

When 20-year-old racing driver Jamie Chadwick finished second in a Ginetta GT4 Supercup race back in June of 2018, she knew she had done something special. After finishing one place behind four-time British Touring Car Champion, Tom Ingram, she knew that he was going to go all out at every race and never give up.

Becoming a professional comes with challenges

The challenges of becoming a professional racing driver are nothing short of extreme. In order to qualify for many series, you’ll need thousands of laps under your belt—with very few mistakes. This takes hundreds of hours on track, not to mention countless sessions in simulators and motion-based driving pods. It’s not easy—but it is possible if you stay focused and dedicated.

The ups, downs and everything in between

The world of motorsport is competitive. No matter how talented you are, it’s going to take a lot of effort and determination to reach the top.

The ultimate win – championship winner at last!

With just one race remaining in the W Series Championship season, 22-year-old Jamie Chadwick was three points behind Colombian Ana Cañas for third place. Cañas had finished second on two occasions and third on another two occasions, whereas Chadwick had only managed a best result of fourth position. It looked as though Cañas’ consistency might be enough to hold off a determined charge from her British rival – but it wasn’t!
