How did you prepare for your role?
I did a lot of research about cults, and some of my friends who were in sects for a long time helped me learn about what it’s like to be with people who are not only brainwashing you but holding your life in their hands. It was really important to me that I really convey how isolated and lonely you feel.
How did you become the person you are today?
I’m a loner by nature, and I guess part of that comes from watching my parents struggle in their marriage. In some ways, they still do. I guess what they taught me was to be tough and independent. So in high school, when everyone else was partying or going to football games, I chose other things to keep me busy. Drama class, mostly—I loved being onstage. But even then I wanted more: more attention; more accolades; more fearlessness.
What advice would you give someone who wants to achieve their dreams?
I would advise someone to take it one step at a time. You’re probably saying I want to be a famous actress, but that just doesn’t happen overnight. You have to start with something small like writing and performing in your first play or short film, or creating an indie project and getting it into festivals.
What is it like working in Hollywood?
There are so many talented people in show business, and I’m just lucky enough to be one of them. It takes a special kind of person to work hard, get up early every day, and do what you love.
