Tory Lanez was born Daystar Peterson on August 26, 1992, in Toronto, Canada. He is of Jamaican descent from his father’s side and Filipino and Chinese descent from his mother’s side. Growing up, he was an avid basketball player until a knee injury caused him to refocus his attention on music. In January 2015, Tory revealed to Billboard that he suffers from narcolepsy.

Tory Lanez began recording songs in 2009 and released his first mixtape, The New Toronto, in 2011. He signed a record deal with Interscope Records in 2013 and released his debut studio album, I Told You, on August 12, 2015. His debut single, Say It, peaked at number one on Billboard’s US Rhythmic chart. He was nominated for a 2016 BET Award for Best New Artist.
