I don’t think there’s any way [Luther] could ever get away from that, Tom says. They’ve been bred for it; I think all six of them knew who each other were from birth. Even after splitting up, he felt a connection with his siblings as if he knew he’d see them again at some point. And now that we’re here in present day, Tom shares that meeting his brothers and sisters again has definitely brought him back to life. This job has opened my eyes, he says about playing one of his most challenging roles yet.
What was Luther’s power before the serum?
Luther Hargreeves is a half-human, half-alien with super strength. In order to save his life, his father injected him with a serum that would cure him of all diseases. However, it also had a negative side effect; he could no longer be harmed or die. He becomes nearly immortal and develops impenetrable skin as a result of the injection. When he was ten years old, Tom went outside for hours during winter without gloves or shoes because he thought it was warm outside—until his mother noticed his fingers were blue and frostbitten from exposure. She brought him inside immediately but it took two days for his fingers to thaw out enough so they could be cut off because they were frozen solid.
Is Hargreaves alien?
In addition to being a super-strong, seemingly immortal member of his super-powered adoptive family, Spaceboy has something else you might not have noticed: his eyebrows. That’s right, at first glance Tom Hopper may look like a completely human actor playing a superhero on TV — but if you look at his character from space (or close up), you’ll see that he really does have pointy eyes. It turns out that these aren’t quite alien enough for those who are looking for any and all evidence that The Umbrella Academy is secretly set in an alternate universe where things are just very different.
Why is Luther Number 1?
Spaceboy is responsible for saving his teammates’ lives as they attempt to return to earth. After Vanya’s power cut out while she was piloting their shuttle, he flew it into a tailspin, forcing her powers back on and stabilizing the ship. Had he not done so, Spaceboy could have been tasked with potentially killing his siblings (and himself) rather than sitting down for one final meal with them—so we’ll let him keep his number 1 designation. Throughout most of season 1, Luther spends very little time on screen and Hopper put everything he had into making him feel real without overplaying any particular element of his character’s personality or backstory. We were impressed by that and hope you are too!
Why is Diego called the Kraken?
As his name implies, he can form a giant tentacle out of water that he uses for battle. Diego’s past is vague and fans are wondering what made him join a team under his father’s command. He is quite laid back compared to some of his siblings, and seems more concerned with having fun than anything else. Diegos a natural dancer, who acts somewhat flamboyant most of the time.
