In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the second movie in the Captain America franchise, Bucky Barnes returns to the screen as The Winter Soldier. Although this character has been altered from his comic book counterpart, he is still one of Marvel’s most popular characters and well known to many superhero fans worldwide. Here are some interesting facts about Sebastian Stan’s take on Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier. The Return of Bucky Barnes

How old is Bucky?

During an interview, Sebastian Stan was asked, Can you just tell us how old your character is? Is he in his 20s or 30s? His response: He’s in his 20s, yeah. I don’t know that he ages as well. He doesn’t have any grey hair. It’s a good question and it remains to be seen how much time has passed since we last saw him. It might be a little bit more than we think between Captain America 2 and Avengers 3. But for now, let’s say he is in his early 20s.[1]

Where has he been all this time?

After falling into a frozen lake, Captain America’s best friend and sidekick, James Buchanan Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), was presumed dead. But in fact, he was lost in cryogenic stasis until being rescued by HYDRA and transformed into their super soldier: The Winter Soldier.

How will he return?

Recently, Marvel announced that Sebastian Stan would return as his character from Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky Barnes. Given that Winter Soldier has already been confirmed for Avengers 3 and Captain America 3, what will be his role in these films? Will he face off against Steve Rogers again? Or will he be redeemed once more? Whatever happens, we’re looking forward to seeing Stan back in his old blue suit!

Will he fight for good?

Though it may not seem like it, Sebastian Stan has confirmed that his character, Bucky Barnes, will be fighting for good upon his return to The Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said that he was very excited to work with Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok and felt comfortable working in New Zealand which allowed him to bond with other cast members in a way he did not experience while shooting Captain America: Civil War.

When will we see him again?

Marvel movie-goers may have been disappointed by The Winter Soldier’s absence in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but they will get a chance to see Cap’s childhood friend again sooner than expected. Chris Evans confirms that Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky in Civil War, and says that, despite what was seen in The Winter Soldier, some things may be changing for his character.

On Becoming The Winter Soldier

Sebastian Stan is no stranger to playing super-soldiers; he also took up that mantle in Captain America: The First Avenger. On Upcoming Projects

I have a bunch of projects coming up. I play Steve Rogers’ best friend Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger, out July 22. I just wrapped another Disney movie called Prom which is about high school students with superpowers and it was directed by Joe Nussbaum and it stars Aimee Teegarden, who’s also in The First Avenger.

On Captain America Fans

I’m such a fan of [Captain America] and I love what they did with it. I thought they did a really great job with those characters and The Winter Soldier is an interesting character. He’s someone who has more to say than just fighting, so it was cool to see that kind of arc in him throughout all three films.

On Captain America: Civil War

It’s so hard for me to talk about Civil War because I don’t want to spoil anything. It was interesting, we did a lot of research and I think it was very rewarding in a way—you kind of really understand what Bucky went through.

How did t’challa know where Steve and Bucky flew to in civil war?

According to Sebastian Stan, it’s because Wakanda has the vibranium-powered tech that allows them to pinpoint things when you don’t even know where you are. Okay, we totally buy that. (Plus, isn’t Black Panther supposed to be part cat?) While that may not be true of all Vibranium tech (as stated in Avengers: Age of Ultron), it definitely makes sense for a king like T’Challa.

When was Bucky mentioned in Iron Man 2?

When Tony Stark was hiding in his basement lab, he used Bucky’s name as an alias. The movie used Sebastian Stan to portray Bucky Barnes in flashback scenes of Captain America: First Avenger and showed him as brainwashed into being a Soviet assassin known as Winter Soldier. When he killed Howard Stark, Peggy’s (Tony’s mom) husband, that’s when they tried to get rid of him.

Why did Steve Rogers leave Bucky?

Steve left Bucky to die in World War II, but he survived. Before leaving, Rogers asked that Bucky be given a false identity. The only thing he asked for in return was for Rogers to never be told what happened to him afterward. So far it seems like both sides of that agreement have been broken; now that Captain America: Civil War is out, we can get a glimpse into what might have happened between these two former best friends.
