How did you become an actor?

I’ve always loved acting and knew it was something I wanted to pursue as a career. After high school, I moved to Los Angeles and started taking classes. I got my first big break when I was cast in Reservation Dogs. Playing Bear has been an amazing experience and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. The character is such a compelling person because he feels like he’s done everything right and done what society tells him to do, but he still doesn’t feel validated. He doesn’t know who he is because his identity is shaped by other people’s expectations of him. It’s really interesting to explore that on set with this incredible team of artists that I’m working with.

What made you want to be part of Reservations Dogs?

I grew up with only my mother parenting me and I’m still very close to her. She taught me to be independent and to never give up on myself. When I saw the audition notice for Reservations Dogs, I knew it was something I had to do. I related to Bear Smallhill immediately and felt like I could really bring him to life. Plus, it didn’t hurt that the show is filmed in my hometown of Albuquerque, NM. It’s been a great experience so far. My first time working as an actor has been rewarding and challenging at the same time. It’s a great opportunity to learn from all these incredible actors I get to work with every day.

What was it like working on Reservations Dogs?

It was great working on Reservation Dogs. Bear Smallhill is a great character and I loved playing him. He’s the leader of the pack, even though he’s the only one who thinks so. He’s very close to his mother and grew up with only her parenting him. It was a great experience working on this show. We shot it in Atlanta, Georgia at an Indian reservation. They had animals there that they let us use during filming! We also went horseback riding which was really fun. The whole cast got along really well and we’re still friends now which made it easier shooting each episode every day for 6 weeks.

What are you most excited about from this experience?

I am most excited about getting to explore what it means to be a leader and how that can translate into different dog breeds. I also love that this show is set in my home state of Montana. It’s always nice to see familiar places on TV. And of course, I’m excited to work with such a talented group of dogs! I grew up with only my mother parenting me, so I’ve never had siblings. But these six dogs are like brothers to me

What advice would you give aspiring actors?

Being a successful actor takes more than just talent. It takes hard work, dedication, and a whole lot of luck. However, if you have what it takes and are willing to put in the work, then there’s no reason why you can’t achieve your dreams. Here are a few pieces of advice for aspiring actors that I’ve picked up along the way:

1) In order to make it as an actor, you need to be really good at acting. The world is full of talented people who don’t make it because they don’t try hard enough or don’t have enough passion for acting. If this is something that excites you and makes you happy, keep at it!

2) Stay humble. Many people will not like your success and will try their best to bring you down.

Are there any upcoming projects that we should know about?

Yes! Bear is currently working on a new project called The Great Escape. The project is about a group of friends who plan and execute a daring escape from their reservation. Bear is also set to star in and produce the film. We can’t wait to see him take on this new role!
