What does Alaric bring to the show?
For three seasons, Alaric was more than just a history teacher. He was the resident vampire expert, the de facto protector of Mystic Falls and its inhabitants—all the while moonlighting as one of the Salvatore brothers’ father-in-law. The show has seen other characters fill that void since his departure, but they never felt quite right. They had an uphill battle to fill those shoes because no one can measure up to what he meant to The Vampire Diaries.
Why is he important?
Alaric is an integral part of the world that The Vampire Diaries has established. He is at the crux between Mystic Falls and the Other Side, his history with vampires serves as a counter to Damon’s anti-vampire beliefs, he was Jenna’s love interest, creating a relationship between himself and her brother. Even when he died in season three we still saw him in flashbacks.
Why did he leave?
During season 3, Davis stated that he was not informed that his character would be killed off until just before it happened. He declined to return for two more episodes at first, but decided to appear in a cameo during season 4 because he enjoyed working with his former cast mates so much. However, once again departing from a long-running series, he appeared as a guest star during seasons 5 and 6.
What happens when he returns?
There’s really only one thing I can say about his return: it was great! Since he left in such a dramatic fashion, it’s understandable that they would keep him out of season four (and even more understandable that they wouldn’t bring him back in any capacity whatsoever). But as soon as Damon did what he did at the end of season five, I couldn’t help but wonder when/if Davis would make his triumphant return. And now we know—he does!
Where is he now?
When his character was killed off in season three, many fans were heartbroken. With all of his appearances being only as a guest star from then on, those fans have never really been able to say goodbye.
How do his relationships with other characters change his role in the story?
One thing that makes him so special is his relationships with other characters. Each relationship he forms changes how his character acts, reacts, and drives a large part of his story line throughout seasons one through eight. If you look at season one specifically, in order to keep Jenna safe from vampires like himself (as most vampires are allergic to sunlight), he goes from being her teacher to her guardian. He does everything in his power to not only keep her safe physically but also mentally.

Even though there have been many romantic relationships in Elena Gilbert’s life, one of her most important has been with her friend Matt Davis. When Elena and Damon Salvatore first started their love affair, it seemed like nothing could bring them down. However, a few months into their relationship something very significant happened that changed everything for Elena. A man named Stefan Salvatore returned from London to Mystic Falls and immediately set his sights on Elena again.
Relationships with other female characters
The show’s creator, Kevin Williamson, has said that Caroline would become important to Alaric and that, for the rest of [their] lives, he would always be there for her. This was not what most fans wanted; they saw him as a tragic figure whose death was meaningful, which was why his return from it was seen as cheapening.
Relationship with male characters
As Caroline Forbes stated, there are no other men in Mystic Falls who aren’t related to us. With a group of male characters being dominated by Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), and Sheriff Forbes (Nathan Parsons) with only one remaining teacher in addition to Matt, it is clear that he isn’t there for his manliness or sexuality.
