Black Mirror was an anthology series originally shown on Channel 4 in the UK, created by Charlie Brooker and shown from 2011 to 2014 (with one special episode in 2017). It was praised by critics and won numerous awards, including three Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes. Each of the episodes explored a different dystopian theme utilising the technology of the near future and it has been described as the Twilight Zone of British television. Here are my five favourite episodes! The Best of Black Mirror

Fifteen Million Merits

This is an episode about a future world where young people have to ride bikes and earn Merits for doing so. A million merits will allow them to put in a good word for you with popular TV producers. The main character, Bing, goes on a journey that reveals how it all works and how he can use his talents to make it big. It’s not just about cycling; it’s also about fame, popularity, love, family relationships—and how we are all willing to compromise our integrity if we think there’s something in it for us.

White Bear

This episode is particularly striking in its realism and, in particular, some memorable scenes. Two children come across a woman sitting on a bench (Kiran Sonia Sawar). She has a white teddy bear beside her. The woman stares at them but doesn’t react when they look back at her. As they walk away, she gets up and follows them without saying anything, still holding onto her teddy bear.

Hated in the Nation

In Hated in the Nation, our first long-form episode (47 minutes), Detective Karin Parke (Kelly Macdonald) investigates a series of murders where all clues point to hated Twitter personas being responsible. She teams up with Blue Coulson (Faye Marsay), an officer from her past, and together they try to find justice for their victims—and some closure for themselves.

San Junipero

This thought-provoking episode addresses human nature, disability and sexuality through a made-up holiday resort. This episode also delves into that irresistible thought: What if I could live forever? San Junipero pushes boundaries with its characters and storyline, but in an imaginative way that leaves you thinking. Have a watch; it’s worth it.

A mother uses advanced technology to watch over her daughter from afar. However, she soon finds out it’s not only her daughter that is being watched. This episode explores themes of parenthood and privacy.

The best episode out of all 4 seasons (My opinion) is season 3, episode 4 San Junipero.
