Jan Bellows, played by actress Amy Ryan, is one of the most interesting characters in the show The Wire (2002-2008). She’s a renowned professional bassoonist who lives in 6A at the Arconia and starts dating Charles Reese, one of the two main characters of the show, after they meet while Jan serves as his acting coach. Unlike many other female characters in the show, Jan’s sexuality doesn’t matter to her character. Only Murders in the Building: Amy Ryan as Jan Bellows (season 1)

Who was guest star Amy Ryan?

Can she get any more adorable? She’s been one of my favorite character actresses for some time now. I remember her from In The Bedroom, where she played Sissy Spacek’s troubled daughter. That was a creepy, cool performance.

She played a supporting role alongside Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in Changeling, where she was nominated for an Oscar® and Golden Globe® award. And her appearance on Law & Order: SVU not only led to another nomination from her peers but it also reminded me that I have yet to see Gone Baby Gone, which is reportedly pretty good.

Why do we think she may have killed her husband?

We’ve been watching Amy Ryan a lot lately. Maybe it’s just because we’re so attached to her on The Office, but either way, she’s been popping up everywhere, and each time we see her we’re reminded of how great she is. That brings us to The Wire — a series that did not appeal to us initially — where she plays an alcoholic-turned-bassoonist named Janie who lives in Baltimore. She was recently separated from her husband when he died. Her son doesn’t think much of his father, but Janie doesn’t seem like she has many friends other than social ones and bores herself with their stories at parties at their complex.

Who was victim Donald Melvoin?

A group of swingers get drunk and decide to have a little fun at their friend’s house who just happens to live right next door to Jan. They break into his apartment and strip him naked. But since they’ve also taken every single piece of Donald’s clothing, including his keys, wallet, and watch, they decide he’ll have to be tied up while they take pictures with him. Unfortunately for them – but fortunately for us – it turns out that there’s a reason why Donald is called The Tied-Up Man amongst those who know him best. As soon as he realizes that he won’t be getting untied anytime soon, he proceeds to beat five people with one arm tied behind his back.

It can happen at any level, whether you’re rich or poor, educated or uneducated.

What can she tell us about season two?

In a recent interview with Deadline, writer Adam Bernstein said that Jan would be part of season two, but he was reluctant to elaborate on what role she’d play. We do have a very good story for her and I can’t tell you how exciting it is, he told them. It’s not that anyone on any show can never come back. It would just be odd timing if we brought her back so quickly. If we hadn’t seen her for a long time and then she popped up again it might feel wrong or strange… You shouldn’t count her out! In other words, don’t expect to see Jan until after a long hiatus… because you won’t see her at all!
