On December 8, 2011, North Korean state media announced that Dear Leader Kim Jong-il died on the morning of December 17, 2011 at 8:30 AM (local time) due to great mental and physical strain while on a train journey.[1] The unexpected death of the Dear Leader after 17 years of leadership left the future of North Korea in question. North Korean politician Kim Jong-un s rise to power

Early life

Kim was born in North Korea on January 8, 1984; his mother is Ko Yong-hui. His birth year has also been reported as 1982 or 1983. Kim is a grandson of Kim Il-sung, who was North Korea’s leader from 1948 to 1994, and he was named after his grandfather. North Korean politician Kim Jong-un s rise to power

Political background (1988–2000)

Kim Jong-il had three sons and two daughters with four women. Kim Jong-un was born in 1983 or 1984 in an unknown location. His mother is Ko Yong-hui, a South Korean who was abducted by North Korea as a teenager.

Invasion of South Korea (1950–1953)

In 1950, Kim Il-sung, who had held a series of military posts during the Japanese occupation, assumed leadership over what became known as North Korea. Confronted with an invasion by South Korea and supported by UN troops led by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur in June 1950, Kim Il-sung sought support from China and formed a tenuous alliance with that country; subsequently Chinese troops largely drove UN forces from North Korea.

Beginning of his political career (2001–2010)

In May 2001, Kim was appointed to a senior position in the Secretariat of the party’s Central Committee. He spent two years alternately accompanying his father, Kim Jong-il, on inspections of military units and providing ‘on-the-spot guidance’ at construction sites.[10] It was speculated that he was being groomed for a larger role within North Korea’s leadership and might eventually take over from his father.

Ruling North Korea (2011–present)

After his father’s death in December 2011, Kim was predicted to become leader by analysts who saw him as the regime’s ‘designated successor’. This was confirmed on 28 December 2011 when he was elected unopposed to become Supreme Leader of North Korea at age twenty-seven. In 2012, South Korean intelligence predicted that he would remain in power for 50 years.

Rise to power

Born on January 8, 1984 in Pyeongyang, North Korea, Kim Jong-Un is a son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and his consort Ko Yong Hui. He was educated in Switzerland and reportedly speaks some English and German. In 2001 he began attending Pyongyang’s Liebefeld Steinhölzli school under a pseudonym. The identity of his classmates are still unknown but it is known that they did not know his real name nor background.

Political Ideology

In May 2010, he was promoted to be a four-star general and appointed to a senior position in military intelligence. In December 2011, after the death of his father, he was promoted to be marshal of North Korea. After his father’s death, there was speculation that he had inherited his father’s role as ruler of North Korea either because he had succeeded unopposed or because back-room deals between powerful elites had decided on him as successor.

Relationships with other people

The future leader of North Korea has also been seen with his wife and family, but little is known about them. His wife, Ri Sol-ju, gave birth to a baby girl in 2012. Little is known about their relationship or what they do during their time together. Speculation abounds that she is a music teacher or even a singer for one of North Korea’s state pop groups.

Can you legally go to North Korea?

The only way for most people to visit North Korea is with a tour group. But unless you’re from South Korea, it’s illegal for you to enter North Korea by yourself. The United States Department of State won’t give tourist visas to any Americans who aren’t planning on visiting other countries before entering North Korea.

Can North Koreans leave North Korea?

In a nutshell, no. The border between North Korea and South Korea is closed. There’s a demilitarized zone (DMZ) between these two countries that divides one of Asia’s biggest countries into two completely separate entities: North Korea, led by its controversial supreme leader, Kim Jong-un; and South Korea, a flourishing nation with a population of 50 million people.
