Matthew Warchus was born on October 24, 1966 in Rochester, Kent, England, UK. Matthew attended Oxford University and graduated with a First Class degree in English. He was a member of the Footlights Dramatic Club. After working as an assistant director at Oxford Playhouse and an associate director at The Old Vic Theatre in London, he directed his first play at age 24 in 1991: The Life of Galileo by Bertolt Brecht. Matthew lives in London with his wife and two children. In 1992, he became Artistic Director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse and remained there until 1999. From 1999-2002, he ran Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre where his productions included Hamlet (2000) which transferred to Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre for a limited run; A Streetcar Named Desire (2001), which toured nationally to great acclaim; Coram Boy (2002); A Woman Killed With Kindness (2004) and Moll Flanders (2005). In 2002, Matthew became Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Great Britain.
