About this BBC show
The BBC series Peaky Blinders is centered around a gang in post-WWI Birmingham that now deals in illegal bookmaking. The show’s rising star is its antagonist (and based on real-life criminal) Luca Changretta, played by Adrien Brody. Since he appeared on the show earlier this year, his character has gone from being a minor hoodlum to one of its biggest threats. His actions are growing bolder and more bloodthirsty as season four progresses and it’s not just Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) he’s after either; new characters also get caught up in his web. One of these characters could be Arthur Shelby Jr.
The main characters and their roles
Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby- The leader. Adrien Brody as Luca Changretta- The vicious mobster and Italian boss of Birmingham. Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby Jr.- He is Tommy’s brother who was in charge at one point, but now has dementia. Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly-
She raised Tommy after his father died in World War I and is a fierce matriarchal force within her family and area. Finn Cole as Michael Gray- He is an old childhood friend of Tommy who made money with him in London before returning to Birmingham.
Who is Luca Changretta?
Luca Lucky Changretta (portrayed by Adrien Brody) is a fictional character and enemy to Thomas Shelby and his family in Season 4 of Peaky Blinders. Luca is played by American actor Adrien Brody who has starred in several films including: The Pianist (2003), The Village (2004), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Predators (2010) and InAPPropriate Comedy (2012). He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003. Lucar Changrettal is described as dangerous, unpredictable and obsessed with power. This could make him a formidable opponent to Tommy Shelby who has ruled Birmingham with relative ease until now.
His importance in the series
He is one of Tommy Shelby’s main rivals. He made an appearance in season 1 and season 2 and was mentioned throughout season 3. He is portrayed by Adrien Brody in seasons 1 and 2. In season 3 he gets shot by John Shelby (played by Joe Cole) but remains alive until series 4. At that point he disappears from the story line until Tommy proposes a deal with him in order to take control over London during season 5 when they say goodbye before coming back together at episode 8’s conclusion. Luca has recently been released from prison and wants revenge on Tommy for putting him there.
His similarities with Tommy Shelby
Family-oriented : Both Luca and Tommy are very family-oriented. They are proud of their family’s name and they do whatever they can to protect them. They are loving fathers who do everything in their power to provide for their family. This quote from Luca shows just how much he values his father’s wishes and wants to live up to them: You know my father would have done anything for me (Series 3: Episode 1). The fact that Lucas is so willing to give everything up for his family shows that he also shares a similar quality with Tommy Shelby – loyalty . We see evidence of both characters being loyal throughout series three as Tommy becomes increasingly distracted from his normal business due to his need to protect John Jr and Arthur from Billy Kimber.
Is Adrian Brody good in Peaky Blinders?
Yes, Adrian Brody is absolutely fantastic in Peaky Blinders. He’s chilling to watch as Luca Changretta (the terrifying Neapolitan gangster who takes over Birmingham’s underworld). With his cold eyes and fiery demeanor, he’s menacing enough that it almost seems like an injustice when Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) whacks him in season 4. No matter your feelings on how season 4 wrapped up, there’s no denying that season 3 set things up perfectly for Brody’s arrival.
Who is Luca Changretta based on?
Not someone specific but a dangerous Italian gangster called Pino Lucchese who was on New York’s Most Wanted list in 1970 and escaped from jail in 1971. He fled to Sicily but was eventually captured in 1978. However, there are some big differences between Luca and Lucchese; ‘Changretta’ is an old Sicilian family name while ‘Lucchese’ comes from a village near Rome. And Changrettas were also famous for their drug trafficking so I gave Luca his own particular drug – heroin! So he’s quite different to Lucchese but both are quite charming and handsome as well as being slightly dangerous. You never know when they might turn violent!
