Interview with the Artist
When we sat down with artist/activist Birce Akalay to talk about her new piece Lale Kiran as The Crow Flies, she stressed how important it is for an activist to be able to express herself in whatever way suits her. It’s hard enough being a black person in America without creating more barriers for yourself by censoring your art and not showing who you really are. It’s important to create from a place of honesty and realness; otherwise people will see right through you and know that you don’t really stand for anything. Plus, if you believe in what you’re saying, then everything else will come naturally.
The Studio Visit
In an age of mechanized, computerized and glamorized filmmaking, Akalay is one director who always welcomes you into her studio to see what’s really going on behind her lens. In a recent interview with IFFBoston, she spoke candidly about how finding your eye is so important in being a filmmaker. There are some people who have amazing stories to tell but aren’t able to put them down on film in an authentic way, she said. The camera is such a complex piece of equipment that it can be intimidating if you don’t know how to use it, but once you master that first hurdle of getting it under control, you can bring your vision to life.
Painting by Numbers
To some, painting by numbers might sound like a humdrum assignment. But to artist and illustrator Birce Akalay, it’s a way of celebrating order while creating art. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, she moved to New York when she was 16 and attended Parsons School of Design. Later, she found her way into product design with a job at fashion label Kate Spade where she worked for seven years before landing at Razorfish NYC in 2012. Nowadays—while still designing products—she’s also pursuing her passion for illustration. And it seems there’s no subject matter off limits for her colorful watercolors or pen and ink drawings that infuse modern city scenes with an artistic twist.
