The BBC and Netflix’s Peaky Blinders has been on a roll lately, with two new seasons in the span of one year and more fantastic casting announcements than you can count on both hands. Today’s announcement, however, may be the most exciting yet! Not only will we get to see Cillian Murphy return as Tommy Shelby, but former UK Poet Laureate Benjamin Zephaniah will join the cast as Jeremiah Jimmy Jesus! Jeremiah Jesus Joins the Peaky Blinders!

Who is ‘Jeremiah’?

Jeremiah was a Jewish prophet from 6th Century BC who famously predicted that Babylon would fall to Persia and rebuilt Jerusalem after it had been destroyed. However, he is probably better known for his role in Birmingham gangster drama Peaky Blinders. The character of Jeremiah, played by Benjamin Zephaniah, is a spiritual leader to Arthur Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and plays an integral part in shaping him as he comes out of prison. While historical sources mention Jeremiah having many children and grandchildren, it is unclear if any of them were named Jimmy… but they might have been! Historically accurate or not, we’re looking forward to seeing what happens next on one of our favourite shows! The fourth series recently wrapped filming and will air next year on BBC One.

Why should we care?

There’s no denying that last season of Peaky Blinders had some of our favorite scenes to date, from Thomas Shelby’s emotional confession about his time in WWI to Polly Gray’s birth. But we would be remiss if we didn’t say that there was one scene that blew our mind: seeing Benjamin Zephaniah as Jeremiah Jimmy Jesus.

We knew that he was a Brummie singer and activist, but we didn’t realize he also had a passion for acting — although it turns out many famous artists secretly have another creative outlet.

What’s next for this character?

Series creator Steven Knight has said that he wants to show us how Arthur Shelby founded his empire, so expect more intense criminal activity from Thomas, John and Arthur. Joe Cole will play a younger version of Tommy Shelby’s future partner in crime Freddie Thorne. And we’ll get to meet another one of Tommy’s family members: Christian had hinted that we’ll also be meeting Tommy’s Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory), who shares his gambling addiction. Oh, and Tom Hardy is returning as Alfie Solomons, who—with Michael Gray (Finn Cole) dead—might now be played by Cillian Murphy as well? We can only hope!

Next season’s most anticipated moments?

Season 3 of Peaky Blinders is anticipated to be better than ever and with new cast member Jeremiah Jimmy Jesus, who will be portrayed by Benjamin Zephaniah, it’s sure to be just that. In my opinion though he could have been cast in a better role to add more depth to an already iconic show. However, I am curious as to how his character will play out and what it may mean for Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family. My biggest question mark is also around Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) because viewers weren’t really given any background on him which makes me wonder what his involvement may be.

3 Things To Remember About Jimmy/Jeremiah In Season 4

Season 4 of Peaky Blinders will be intense as we welcome Jeremiah Jimmy Jesus back to our screens, along with Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory), Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), Michael Gray (Finn Cole) and Linda Shelby (Kate Phillips). The BBC confirmed that Jimmy would return to Birmingham in season 4 with cryptic teaser trailer released on May 18th, 2017, however I am convinced that Jimmy will make his return in one of episode 1 or 2. Was there a black Peaky Blinder?

Benjamin Zephaniah has always been a bit of an enigma to his audience. Throughout his impressive 30-year career, he has managed to speak truth to power in a way that many struggle to do. Now, it appears that he is taking on another role: entering history as one of TV’s first black members of an established family! We couldn’t be more excited about having Benjamin joining us, said Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight in an interview with The Guardian. His performance was astonishing and I can’t wait for audiences around the world to see him on their screens in season 4 and beyond. This is certainly a historic moment for BBC One and a precedent not likely to be broken any time soon.
