Why pay hundreds of dollars for an editing suite when there are free versions that can do most of the same things? Windows 10 comes with many great tools to edit images and videos, including the Windows 10 Photos app and Movie Maker. In this article, we’ll teach you how to use these tools to get the job done without breaking the bank. How to Get a Free Video Editor with Windows 10

Install Lightworks

Lightworks is an open-source video editor that runs on PCs. It’s available for free if you have Windows 8 or later, although users can make a donation for access to extra features and functions (around $55). If you’re using Microsoft’s platform, download Lightworks from its website here. Otherwise, look up free video editors for Mac on Google.

Create an account

Head on over to Microsoft’s OneDrive website and sign up for an account. Just note that, if you’re using Windows 7 or 8.1, you won’t be able to upgrade until after March 31, 2016. However, if you do upgrade before then, it will remain free until July 29, 2017. Don’t miss out! After creating your account, install OneDrive onto your computer (Windows XP is not supported). If you haven’t already done so, download and install one of these compatible video editors: HitFilm Express (free), iMovie (free), or Windows Movie Maker ($9.99). Once installed, open your video editor of choice and create a new project. Click File > Import > From PC/Device to start importing your clips from OneDrive into your video editor.

Create a project

One of Microsoft’s more recent operating systems, Windows 10 is geared toward simplicity and efficiency. If you’re looking for something that will let you take some simple video clips and edit them quickly, give it a try. You can use your voice or keyboard to get around, and there are even plenty of shortcuts built in. There are also lots of third-party programs that can boost your productivity further.

Record your screen or webcam

If you don’t have much cash to spend on editing software, there are plenty of ways to trim your videos without spending a dime. One of our favorite tools for basic video editing is iMovie (iOs only). Another good option is Windows Movie Maker, which also has received excellent reviews for users. If you’re looking for something very simple—not an editor but still easy enough for beginners—consider 4K Best Video Software or AVS Video Editor.

Edit your recordings

Though you may be tempted to snag one of those free video editing tools, like Magisto (we tried it, and it’s a great tool) or iMovie (ditto), consider investing in something a little more sophisticated. While you might not have much use for these professional-level tools, they can edit your videos quickly and easily. Try Adobe Premiere Elements 15+ if you want a strong combination of power and ease of use; or Final Cut Pro X if you need something powerful that will let you handle large projects—or work with 4K video.

Export and save your video

In order to upload your video and/or share it, you will need to export it. Make sure you select Video when exporting. Underneath Save as type select YouTube, then under Format select either MP4 or WebM. If you’re uploading to YouTube, they recommend using MP4 format. If not uploading to YouTube, use WebM format for HTML5 videos.

Does Windows 10 have a free video editor?

The most powerful video editor in Microsoft’s arsenal is its own flagship app, Movies & TV. The newest version of it—version 2.2—is available now on PCs, but only if you have version 1607 or higher of Windows 10 installed. It’s included as part of that upgrade, so if you already have Windows 10 you won’t need to search for it separately and then download and install it.

Is OpenShot safe?

The OpenShot software has been around for a while, which is always nice—it means it’s had time to be tested, ironed out and improved. The software can be installed on multiple computers, so there’s no limit on how many people can use it at once (unlike some free video editing suites). This makes it ideal for small businesses that need video editors at different workstations. It also includes plenty of effects, transitions and other basic tools that are necessary for video editing. It doesn’t have as many advanced features as premium programs like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X , but it does offer enough variety in terms of themes and effects to make up for it.

Is VSDC free?

Well, sort of. VSDC is free for non-commercial use. This means you can download it and use it as long as you’re not charging people to watch your video. If you’d like to use VSDC for commercial purposes, you’ll need to purchase a license. But don’t worry – commercial licenses are reasonably priced and good for personal or business use!
