Michael’s inspiration behind taking on this role
When I was reading it, I just felt like he could be somebody that I would have a lot of fun with, he says. He’s very egocentric and likes himself a lot. Did he base his performance on someone else?
Masini states that he did not base his performance on anyone and that he tried his best to make it as original as possible. He is definitely a complex person, he adds. I was just trying to be as fair and respectful and understanding of him as I could. It’s an actor’s job to explore the depths of who their character is and make sure they understand where they are coming from. That’s what we did for this film, you know? The movie follows the story of Marilyn Monroe’s last 24 hours before her death in 1962.

He also has extensive Broadway experience with performances that include Singin’ In The Rain and Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! What went into getting into character?
Michael recalls reading Tony and Jackie: A Love Story written by Peter Viertel on his trip back home to Pennsylvania. Reading the book led him to a heightened understanding of the man he was playing.
He decided that he would shave his head so he could feel more like an outcast; plus it would make it easier for hair and makeup people on set because they wouldn’t have to do as much styling when they were working with him. Michael’s other preparations included visiting Los Angeles where he visited all of favorite haunts and just walked around from place to place, remembering all the things that happened during the time period.
He also went through footage from over 50 films made by Tony Curtis, which gave him insight into how the actor worked on-set, who he liked working with, what type of roles he wanted to play, etc.
