Who plays the young Janine Cody on Animal Kingdom?

For a show that consistently puts its characters through hell, it’s kind of odd how much Animal Kingdom reminds us all that life is worth living. On Wednesday night’s episode, Burning Bridges, we got yet another reminder just how powerful those reminders can be. Early in Season 3, Leila George—who plays young Janine Smurf Cody on Animal Kingdom—had a pivotal scene. Although she was playing 29-year-old Smurf in 1984, her character appeared as 22-year-old girl named Justine. She first appeared being gang raped by two men and then has sex with J (Finn Cole) in his car.

As a child, young Janine was raised by a heroin-addicted single mother in downtown Detroit who regularly brought men home and used them for money and sex. As soon as she could, Smurf left that life behind, leaving her troubled childhood (and her abusive mother) behind. She joined a gang run by ex-con Cornell Cookie Burrows and quickly became his most trusted accomplice. Over time, Cookie’s fame grew while Janine’s own reputation got around Detroit as well thanks to her quick rise up through the ranks—not just as an enforcer but also one capable of driving high-dollar heists.

In one 1984 episode, she fought with another female criminal (Junkie Deb) in order to become leader of their all-female gang. In another episode, titled Bad Girl’s Revenge, that aired September 11, 1986, junkie Deb gets out of prison and starts causing trouble for Smurf. She steals from her and starts dating Knuckles McSmashy without his knowledge that she has stolen from him as well. Bad girl’s revenge is taken literally when Deb attacks her while she is having lunch with McSmashy at a cafe. This attack results in getting both women arrested.

Being A Mom & Living A Double Life

Our favorite character on Empire, who’s gone from a gangster bad girl to a family matriarch over four seasons, is facing her biggest struggle yet: losing her husband and being forced to protect and raise her children alone. But Janine Smurf Cody isn’t your typical Mother Hen. She started out as an orphaned runaway and got involved with a group of ruthless career criminals called The Dragons. Her life was saved by future husband Lucious Lyon, who took her under his wing and taught her how to be a ruthless mob boss like him—even though she secretly longed for a different kind of life that included marriage and kids. However, she has never been able to quit crime completely—until now.

Finding And Staying In Love

There is something very special about finding love at an early age. And it’s even more special when you find someone that you want to spend a lot of time with. Over 70% of teens today are in relationships, and just over half have been together for over a year, so there is certainly no lack of people in relationships out there. But some things don’t change; being a teen still comes with its own unique set of challenges, especially when it comes to finding love and navigating your way through dating without completely burning your relationship down in one ugly fire. After all, high school doesn’t last forever, and neither do those feelings. As soon as graduation rolls around and everyone starts their new lives together, it’s easy for your feelings to go away or fade into nothingness.
