What drives someone to hate the person they see in the mirror? How does it feel to struggle with something that most people wouldn’t think twice about? Jacob Elordi, star of the hit HBO series Euphoria, had some answers to these questions when he took on the role of Nathaniel Nate Jacobs in the first season of this sexually-charged drama series. As Nate, Elordi brings a depth and sensitivity to one of the show’s three main characters while also adding an intensity that pushes Nate into unpredictable places as Season 1 progresses. What drew you to this project?
I was first drawn to Euphoria when I saw the trailer. It looked like such an intense and unique show that I knew I had to watch it. And I’m so glad I did! The acting, writing, and directing are all top-notch, and the show tackles some really important topics. It’s definitely not an easy watch, but it’s definitely worth it.
How do you relate to your character?
I can relate to my character Nate on so many levels. We both have anger issues that mask our sexual insecurities. We’re both high school athletes who are struggling to find our place in the world. And we both have a deep desire to be loved and accepted for who we are. I think that’s what drew me to the role in the first place. I saw a lot of myself in Nate and I knew I could bring his story to life in a way that would resonate with people.

And it’s okay to not be sure about who you are. It’s okay to take time and figure out what feels right for you and how you want to identify yourself. It’s also important to remember that being LGBTQ+ is still illegal in many parts of the world, so keep that in mind when making decisions about coming out publicly.
A role he didn’t have to audition for
It’s not often that an actor is offered a role without having to audition, but that’s exactly what happened with Euphoria star Jacob Elordi. The Australian actor was hand-picked by creator Sam Levinson to play the part of Nathaniel Nate Jacobs, a high school athlete with anger issues that mask his sexual insecurities.

His personal connection with Nate
As someone who’s struggled with anger issues and sexual insecurities, I know how difficult it can be to feel like you’re not in control of your own life. Nate is a character who’s struggling with these same issues, and I related to him immediately. I wanted to show that it’s possible to find hope and happiness even when things seem dark.
On portraying trauma in sex scenes
It’s not easy to portray trauma in sex scenes, but it’s something that needs to be done with care and sensitivity. For actor Jacob Elordi, who plays the role of Nathaniel Nate Jacobs on the HBO series Euphoria, it was important to him to get the scenes right.
Working with co-star Barbie Ferreira
It’s been a pleasure working with Barbie Ferreira on Euphoria. She’s an incredible actress and I feel lucky to have been able to share the screen with her. Playing opposite her has been a great experience and I’ve learned a lot from her. I’m excited to see what she does next.

Though he’s playing a character with some serious anger issues, Jacob Elordi says he can relate to Nate Jacobs on a personal level.
