Released in 1993 and directed by David Cronenberg, Spiderhead is the story of Steve Abnesti, a man who works as an exterminator at a research facility called Spiderhead. The facility focuses on experiments and treatments related to mental illness, in particular one based on the idea that certain feelings like fear can be implanted into people’s minds through verbal commands repeated over and over again. Steve, who has been stationed at Spiderhead for seven years, begins to question the morality of what he’s doing when he meets Danielle Outlaw, a woman visiting her boyfriend Clay Outlaw who also works at Spiderhead. Before being a actor, Chris was involved with football for 10 years

It’s 10 years, then I started acting and that sort of took over, he tells HuffPost. I’d love to see what I could do with it if I went back. Maybe one day he will: a possible career shift isn’t something Hemsworth spends too much time thinking about these days, because when you’re Chris Hemsworth, you have bigger things to worry about — like surviving a vampire apocalypse. And just being an overall badass who has fans gushing over his every on-screen move, whether he’s fighting off bloodsuckers or playing an elite CIA operative. But as for whether or not we’ll ever see him running back a kick return or slamming home another touchdown, we might not know until kickoff (or maybe even after). Who knows?

How he began his acting career

Chris Hemsworth was born on August 11, 1983, in Melbourne, Australia. His father is a doctor and his mother an English teacher. At age sixteen he started modeling before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting at age nineteen. In 2010 he landed his first big role in The Cabin In The Woods playing Curt. His big break came when he starred opposite Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston in Thor.

The movie

Spiderhead is a 2004 thriller film written and directed by David Cronenberg, starring Joshua Jackson, Sarah Gadon, Peter MacNeill, Elias Koteas and Carrie-Anne Moss. It was shot at Dalhousie University’s Babcock Hall in Halifax, Nova Scotia. An earlier version of the story was developed during 1995/1996 at Concordia University’s Loyola Campus located in Montreal. The plot follows William Spider Wilson (Jackson), a young man living with a large tumour on his head that feeds him constant visions of himself killing people. He must figure out how to accept these visions before he murders someone for real. The screenplay was published by Faber & Faber in 2005.

The actor

Chris Hemsworth is known for playing Thor, one of Marvel’s biggest heroes on screen. He plays a role which he says is perfect for my personality—it’s very funny, it’s got great humor and fantastic characters. And it’s a superhero film. I mean, come on! Who doesn’t want to be part of something like that?  Born on August 11th, 1983 in Melbourne, Australia, Chris spent his early years living with his parents and siblings near Geelong where they were taught to surf by his father before moving near Byron Bay.

Where you might have seen him before

Chris Hemsworth had a supporting role in Thor, where he played Thor’s brother, Loki. He also appeared in A Perfect Getaway and opposite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol . Recently, he starred opposite Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron in Snow White and The Huntsman. In terms of sci-fi roles, his most famous has been George Kirk (Captain Kirk’s father) on Star Trek. Perhaps because of that performance, Marvel Studios went out of their way to cast him as Tony Stark/Iron Man’s nemesis, Thor.

Why this makes sense as a career move

Okay, so Hollywood execs are not exactly known for their keen sense of judgment. However, it is hard to argue with box office receipts, and Chris’s recent turn in THOR was a mega hit. Plus he looks damn good without a shirt on. So it might be time to revisit that overblown unproven star vehicle from a few years back and give him a meaty role alongside some A-list talent. And yes, his comic timing is strong (anyone who watched that infamous video of him breaking down William Shatner’s door with Jonah Hill will tell you so). But there’s plenty we don’t know about him yet—he would bring an intriguing element of unpredictability to any project.

When was escape from Spiderhead?

Escape from Spiderhead takes place entirely inside of a futuristic prison where inmates are put into virtual reality scenarios and tortured to gain access to memories that they might have buried or hidden. The film is based on a story by Stephen King, and is co-written by King with his son Joe Hill. It’s not just filmmaking experience that Hill brings to Spiderhead; he’s also written comics, including Locke & Key, which has just been released as a graphic novel collection. He started writing comics while he was still in high school, which means he’s not only an experienced filmmaker but an experienced comic book writer too! He even got to work on Avengers Vs X-Men: AvX Infinite with AVX scribe Brian Michael Bendis.

Is there gonna be an extraction 2?

Like most people, I loved The Martian. I love all things space related, but if there’s one thing that I love more than space exploration it’s a great comedy about spacemen. Two of my favorite films that were released last year were The Martian and Deadpool, so what could be better than a mix of both worlds? Given how seamlessly The Martian and Deadpool were able to fuse humor with their respective genres, it seems like a natural evolution for them to continue down that path by bringing together one of Marvel’s best-loved comedians and one of Hollywood’s hottest stars (both literally and figuratively). It just makes sense!

What new movie is Chris Hemsworth in?

It’s not a movie, but you may have heard of it: Marvel’s Netflix series The Punisher. Starring Jon Bernthal, who portrays Frank Castle (aka The Punisher), and Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page. Also starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah, Ben Barnes and Daniel Webber. Produced by Jeph Loeb and Steve Lightfoot. For more on The Punisher, click here.
