How She Differs From the Comics

The biggest difference between Coel’s Aneka and her comic book counterpart is that the former is explicitly queer. In the comics, Aneka is in a relationship with Okoye, but their relationship is never shown on panel or given a label. Meanwhile, the show makes it clear that Aneka is attracted to women and she and Okoye are in a committed relationship. This is a significant departure from the source material, but it’s one that makes sense given Coel’s own sexuality. As an out lesbian, the actress has a natural empathy for Aneka and her struggle to come out while still trying to protect herself and those she loves. I think I’m more similar to her than not, Coel said of playing the character during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. It was a no-brainer.

What Her Role Means for the Future of Marvel

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has added another big name to its cast, with Michaela Coel joining the film in an undisclosed role. While we don’t know much about her character yet, her casting is significant for a few reasons. The first reason is that she’s one of the few black women in Hollywood who’s starring in a superhero movie. The second reason is that she won’t be playing someone from T’Challa’s supporting cast or antagonists; instead, she’ll be one of the new superheroes featured onscreen for the first time ever. And finally, there’s this – In Wakanda and outside it, people are demanding change when it comes to representation in mainstream media. We’re excited to see what Coel does with her character!
