Murray was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He and his brother were raised by their mother after their parents divorced when he was only three years old. Early on in his childhood, both of his parents encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional tennis player and he began playing at age three. When he was twelve years old, he won an under-12 national championship title and shortly thereafter decided that tennis would be his future.

Murray was ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals for 41 weeks, and finished as year-end No. 1 in 2016. He became only Great Britain’s second ever male singles tennis player to reach a grand slam final at Wimbledon in 2012 (following in Fred Perry’s footsteps from 1936).
